Nowadays, the world is in a state of economic depression; the global financial crisis continues to haunt everyone, anywhere in the world. The jobless people grow more and more as each day passes by. Yet several industries managed to stay afloat despite the sinking status of the economy. And one of them is the health care industry, which includes nurses, occupational and physical therapists, dietitians and phlebotomists. In fact, the health sector is indispensable since mankind cannot survive without its services. Creating more workforces in this
industry including phlebotomy jobs would not just serve sick and well people, but will also contribute in uplifting the world’s economy.Yet the acceptance of health care workers including phlebotomists around the world has been varying from region to region. In the Western countries and Europe, their level of health care needs are continuously increasing thus they are in much need of more workers in their health care business. The United States, for example has great value for phlebotomists and medical assistant phlebotomists are usually in demand in most states. They do what phlebotomists usually do which is to collect blood specimens and sent it to the laboratory for analysis. But this is one of those phlebotomy jobs wherein one serves as the assistant for a phlebotomist, since their job has been slowly in demand due to the ever-growing patient population and increased amount of resources. Aside from the usual blood collection, medical assistant phlebotomists are more concerned about the sterility of their collection materials and blood samples. This is to ensure safety and infection control in the part of the phlebotomist and patient.Phlebotomists must be open to all kinds of people in any setting. Besides from doing venipuncture, phlebotomy requires good interpersonal skills, proper handling and storage, and excellent skills in blood extraction so patients won’t feel discomfort upon inserting a needle into a vein. Familiarizing laboratory procedures, following strict aseptic techniques and proper anxiety management for their patients are also necessary for a phlebotomist to develop in his or her job. The last requirement must be of great emphasis since when patients do not desire to have a blood sample taken from them their job will be deemed incongruent to the needs of the health care team. It is of great importance to educate clients of all ages about the purpose, the procedure proper and what to expect after the blood sample has been withdrawn. In this way, phlebotomists establish trust to their clients particularly the younger ones.First and foremost, for one to be a phlebotomist he or she must have undergone intensive phlebotomy training. For one to get good phlebotomy jobs after he or she receives a certificate, he or she must have a good foundation during the training period. The certificate he or she receives allows him or her to practice phlebotomy. When a newly certified phlebotomist gets to finish the education and training time, he or she will be welcomed by vast opportunities; and despite the current dilemma in today’s economy, phlebotomy would always be a mainstay in the medical field.
